FAWE Sierra Leone recently marked a significant milestone, 30 years of advancing gender equality in education—during celebrations held in Freetown that coincided with the 2025 Day of the African Child. The commemorative event brought together education leaders, policymakers, and civil society to reflect on progress and chart the path forward for girls’ education.

Dr. Martha Muhwezi, Executive Director of FAWE Africa, delivered a powerful keynote address calling for bold investments in girls’ education. “Education is not a privilege for the few; it is a right for all,” she said, underscoring the need for stronger implementation of inclusive policies such as Sierra Leone’s Radical Inclusion framework and the importance of local resource mobilization.

As part of the visit, the FAWE Sierra Leone team, together with Dr. Muhwezi, hosted Hon. Dr. Isata Mahoi, Minister for Gender and Children’s Affairs. The meeting reaffirmed FAWE’s commitment to cross-sector collaboration in promoting gender-responsive education.

In a related effort, FAWE also met with the Association of Language and Literacy Educators Reading Sierra Leone (TALLE RSL). FAWE Sierra Leone’s Gender Responsive Pedagogy training has been instrumental in shaping TALLE RSL’s programming. Together, the two organizations will launch a national network of GRP champions to advocate for its integration into teacher training systems.

The anniversary celebration served not as a conclusion, but as a renewed call to action, amplifying FAWE’s vision of an Africa where every girl can rise, dream, and lead.
