The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), through the Tuseme – A Voice for IDP and Refugee Children Project, is exploring educational innovations in Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia to support refugee and internally displaced (IDP) girls by identifying their academic and social development needs and advocating for effective interventions. The project aims to develop a revised Tuseme model and supporting tools for deployment in refugee and IDP settings, equipping children with essential skills and agency to overcome educational barriers.
Case studies in mainstream schools will assess the current model’s success factors and challenges, alongside FAWE’s Centers of Excellence and Gender-Responsive Pedagogy initiatives. Insights from these studies will inform the revised model, which will be deployed, monitored, and evaluated in refugee and IDP communities. The project will culminate in a finalized Tuseme model and a toolkit to support broader adoption and implementation.
Objective
The overarching objective of this research study is to develop a revised Tuseme model, with associated tools, that can be deployed in Refugee and IDP settings in the East African region. The revised model will help develop children’s skills and agency and support them to overcome barriers in their education and make positive choices in their lives.
The research aim is: To explore if and how the ‘Tuseme’ model can be extended to, and scaled up for, internally displaced persons and refugees in Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia.
