At the African Union International Centre for Girls’ and Women’s Education in Africa (AU CIEFFA), during the high-level session on “Inclusion, Leadership, and Gender Equity,” Dr. Martha Muhwezi, Executive Director of FAWE Africa, delivered an inspiring presentation outlining FAWE’s proven strategies to advance girls’ education and leadership across the continent. With a strong call for collaboration, she emphasized that achieving gender equality in education requires coordinated action, innovative tools, and sustained commitment from governments, civil society, and communities.
Dr. Muhwezi highlighted three flagship approaches that are transforming the education landscape for girls. Gender-Responsive Pedagogy (GRP) equips teachers in over 20 countries to foster inclusive learning environments and champion girls’ participation in STEM and leadership. The Tuseme (“Let Us Speak Out”) Program empowers girls to express themselves confidently, challenge harmful norms, and lead change within their schools and communities. Meanwhile, Intergenerational Leadership initiatives connect FAWE alumni with young girls, nurturing a strong pipeline of empowered female leaders shaping Africa’s future.
Her message resonated clearly: “We must align policies, invest in teachers, and strengthen accountability to turn the tide for girls’ education.” As partners and advocates, we are called to act boldly and strategically.
