Dakar, 30 January 2018

The Global Partnership for Education (GPE), with the governments of Senegal and France, have organised a conference on financing education on 1st and 2nd February. Several Heads of State, the UN Secretary General and other high level senior officials will be in attendance to discuss the future of education.
On 1st February, the Working Group on Gender Equality and Inclusive Education, co-chaired by Save the Children, FAWE and Humanity and Inclusion, have organized an event on the promotion of girls’ educational rights in West and Central Africa.
“Girls’ education is an urgent and crucial subject. It’s about human rights and human dignity. It’s about peace and the development of a country” (Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Presidente of Liberia).
And yet today, 28 million girls don’t have access to education in West and Central Africa. The region is experiencing the greatest gender inequality in education in the world. Factors contributing to low female enrollment rates include gender-biased cultures, early pregnancy, child marriage, poverty and gender-based violence in schools. 67% of girls drop out occur because of violence. It is time to take action to educate girls and ensure an appropriate investment to address these challenges.
This event will enable education sector leaders to put forward sustainable solutions to promote gender equality in West and Central Africa. Governments will be asked to include concrete measures in sectoral education planning that will guarantee the right to education for every girl and boy in the region.
