Kuwait’s Al-Sumait Prizes are a set of annual awards designed to honor significant advances in the fields of food security, health and education in Africa. Administered by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) and a Board of Trustees, the awards celebrate the work and accomplishments of Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwaiti physician who spent his lifetime helping the poor in Africa in the field of health and education. The objective of the prizes is to recognize best studies, scientific projects, applied research, and innovative initiatives that have a significant impact and lasting influence on advancing progress to economic and social development in Africa. www.alsumaitprize.org

FAWE was nominated for the prize by UNESCO-Regional Eastern and Southern Africa and nominations closed in July 2017. The entry submission highlighted the impact of FAWE’s interventions in education development as well as how these interventions can be replicated elsewhere. The focus of the submission was on the FAWE Centre of Excellence Schools (COE), enhancing teachers’ gender-responsive pedagogy, the Tuseme youth empowerment strategy for the students, education scholarships for needy students, activities promoting Mathematics Science and Technology for girls, guidance and counseling, sexual maturation management, and community advocacy and mobilization campaigns. Replication was addressed by underlining the basic conditions necessary for sustainability and self propagation of the demonstrative interventions.

The Executive Director has been invited to receive the prize, on behalf of FAWE, at the awarding ceremony taking place on Wednesday 13 December 2017. The ceremony will be under the patronage of H. H. The Amir of the State of Kuwait.
