Why become a member of FAWE Africa?

  • You get a platform through which you can help influence policy and contribute to girls’ education in Africa

  • You get an opportunity to attend and even represent FAWE in various forums, meetings and even trainings

Ordinary Members are:

  1. The Founding Members of FAWE;
  2. Serving Women Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Education;
  3. Serving women presidents of universities, women vice-chancellors and women deputy vice-chancellors, women rectors and women heads of degree awarding institutions;
  4. Prominent women educationalists including retired executive directors and chairpersons of FAWE, selected by the Board. This category of membership shall not be more that 20 % of Ordinary members subject to review from time to time by the general assembly. Individuals will be appointed for a period of three years, renewable for one term;
  5. Serving women permanent secretaries and/or directors of education in the education ministries provided such a person is the highest serving woman in the Ministry;
  6. Professional women of Africa who work towards promoting girls’ education in their countries. Individuals will be appointed for a period of three years, renewable for one term;
  7. Women who are committed to the objectives of FAWE and its mandate and invited by the Board at its own discretion. Individuals will be appointed for a period of three years, renewable for one term;
  8. Women working for equality and equity in education invited to the membership of FAWE by the Board. Individuals will be appointed for a period of three years, renewable for one term;
  9. National Chapter Chairpersons or representatives selected at the sub-region through a consultative process before the General Assembly as follows; (1) member for each sub-region on a three (3) year rotational basis (rotating by country within the region). Such representative shall have voting rights, but shall not be eligible to be elected; and,
  10. Chairperson of the FAWE Alumni.

Corporate Members are:

  1. National Chapters established in accordance with Article 16 hereof; and,
  2. Institutions committed to the promotion of the education of girls and women within and beyond the region and invited by the Board at its own discretion.

Honorary Members are:

  1. Individuals committed to FAWE’s objectives and mandate;
  2. Serving male Ministers for Education who are committed to the objectives of FAWE and its mandate and invited by the Board at its own discretion;
  3. Former women Ministers and Deputy Ministries, former Permanent Secretaries and Directors of Education, Former Vice-Chancellors, former Presidents of Universities and former Deputy Vice-Chancellors;
  4. Serving women ministers and deputy ministers other than ministers or deputy ministers of education; and,
  5. Women Parliamentarians.

Prerequisites for Membership

  1. Commitment to gender equality and equity in education;
  2. Serving or having served in a high-level decision making position in the Government or University equivalent to Minister and Deputy Minister, Permanent Secretary and Director of Education, Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice- Chancellors, President of University;
  3. Serving or having served as Executive Director or Chair – person of FAWE;
  4. Prominent women educationalist;
  5. Women Professionals;
  6. FAWE beneficiaries;
  7. Professional female African education and/or gender specialists who work in international organizations, development and cooperation agencies, and foundations;
  8. African women parliamentarians who have a demonstrated record of leadership in promoting legislative and education reform, women’s empowerment and gender equality in their country;
  9. African women who have a proven expertise and record in areas for which FAWE needs strengthening, including fundraising, communication, monitoring and evaluation, research; and,
  10. African women from the private sector in charge of corporate social responsibility.

Right of Members:

  1. Members in all categories shall be entitled to participate in the deliberations of FAWE;
  2. Honorary Members may attend meetings and participate in the deliberations but shall have no voting rights at the exception of the regional representatives of the FAWE National Chapters who will be present at the General Assembly;
  3. Voting in the General Assembly on all matters shall be on the basis of one vote per Ordinary Member subject to a maximum of three (3) votes from each country; and,
  4. Only Ordinary Members shall be entitled to attend, participate and vote during the closed sessions of FAWE.

Responsibility of Members:

  1. Members will be expected to promote the objectives of FAWE in every way, including the formation and promotion of National Chapters to advance the work of FAWE in their respective countries;
  2. Ordinary Members will be expected to pay a minimum membership fee of US$100 or its equivalent or such other sum as from time to time stipulated by the Board and an annual subscription of US$100 or its equivalent or such other sum as from time to time stipulated by the Board;
  3. Honorary Members will be expected to pay a minimum membership fee of US$50 or its equivalent or such other sum as from time to time stipulated by the Board and an annual subscription of US$50 or its equivalent or such other sum as from time to time stipulated by the Board;
  4. Corporate Members will be expected to pay a minimum membership fee of US$200 or its equivalent or such other sum as from time to time stipulated by the Board and an annual subscription of US$200 or its equivalent or such other sum as from time to time stipulated by the Board; and,
  5. All categories of members may contribute more than the stipulated minimum fees and subscriptions at their discretion.

The following are the approved profiles of FAWE Ordinary Members including founders, serving Women ministers of education, serving women vice-chancellors, prominent women educationalists, professional women who work towards promoting girls’ education in their countries.
