FAWE Gabon Enters a New Chapter: Renewed Leadership, Stronger Partnerships, and a Shared Vision for Impact

The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Gabon marked a significant milestone on 14 February 2026, as its General Assembly convened in Libreville to elect a new Board and set a renewed strategic direction for advancing gender-responsive education in the country. The Assembly brought together committed members, partners, and stakeholders united by a shared mission: expanding opportunities for girls and young women while promoting inclusive education systems that benefit both girls and boys.

This important governance moment was strengthened by the presence of Dr. Martha Muhwezi, Executive Director of FAWE Africa, who led the Regional Secretariat delegation in support of the chapter. Her participation underscored FAWE Africa’s commitment to strengthening national chapters as key drivers of sustainable impact across the continent.

As members reflected on the chapter’s achievements and future priorities, Dr. Martha emphasised the central role of leadership and governance in ensuring institutional sustainability and growth.

“Governance is the backbone of sustainability. A strong Board ensures that FAWE Gabon does not merely exist—but thrives.”

The Assembly concluded with the successful election of a dynamic and experienced Board, ushering in a new governance cycle focused on strengthening institutional systems, expanding partnerships, and accelerating impact.

Strengthening Institutional Anchoring Through Government Engagement

Following the General Assembly, FAWE Gabon’s new Board, accompanied by Dr. Martha Muhwezi, held a high-level courtesy meeting with Dr. Armande Longo épouse Moulengui, Gabon’s Minister for Social Affairs. This strategic engagement reinforced FAWE Gabon’s institutional positioning and strengthened collaboration with government authorities.

The meeting provided an opportunity to present FAWE’s mission, share the new Board’s priorities, and explore avenues for partnership in advancing gender-responsive education, social protection, and empowerment initiatives. Dr. Martha reaffirmed FAWE Africa’s continued commitment to supporting the Gabon chapter in strengthening governance systems and expanding its national impact.

This engagement represents an important step in ensuring that FAWE Gabon’s work remains aligned with national priorities and supported through strong institutional partnerships.

Expanding Strategic Partnerships with UNESCO and UNFPA

As part of its strategic mission, the FAWE delegation also held high-level discussions with the UNESCO Office in Gabon. Led by Dr. Thierry P. Nzamba Nzamba, UNESCO’s National Programme Officer for Culture, the meeting highlighted strong mutual interest in deepening collaboration to advance inclusive, gender-responsive education.

Discussions focused on scaling up FAWE’s proven approaches—including Tuseme, Gender-Responsive Pedagogy, and Centres of Excellence—which have demonstrated impact in empowering learners, strengthening participation, and improving learning environments.

In a separate engagement, FAWE leaders met with UNFPA Gabon, represented by Madam Octavia Avome Engone, Director of Programs. The discussions reinforced a shared commitment to addressing barriers affecting education, wellbeing, and leadership opportunities for young people. Both organisations emphasised the importance of integrated approaches that promote safe, inclusive, and empowering learning environments.

These engagements reflect growing recognition of FAWE’s leadership and the importance of collaborative partnerships in advancing gender equality and education outcomes.

Building Momentum for Sustainable Impact

The successful General Assembly and subsequent high-level engagements mark the beginning of a promising new chapter for FAWE Gabon. With renewed leadership, strengthened institutional partnerships, and strong support from FAWE Africa and national stakeholders, the chapter is well positioned to expand its reach and impact.

As FAWE Gabon moves forward, its focus remains clear: strengthening governance, expanding opportunities, and ensuring that girls and boys across Gabon have access to safe, inclusive, and quality education.

This milestone reflects not only a transition in leadership—but a renewed commitment to building stronger systems, empowering young people, and advancing gender equality in education across Gabon.
