From 16 to 18 June, FAWE Africa staff successfully completed a three-day intensive Safeguarding Induction Training, marking another important milestone in the organization’s commitment to protecting the children, young people, and vulnerable adults who are at the centre of its work. More than a capacity-building exercise, the training reinforced FAWE’s core values of dignity, respect, accountability, and zero tolerance for all forms of abuse, exploitation, and harm. It reflected the organization’s belief that safe learning and working environments are fundamental to achieving equitable and transformative education across Africa.
Facilitated by FAWE Africa’s dedicated Safeguarding Officer, Mr. Crispus Natala, the induction equipped staff with the knowledge and practical skills needed to identify safeguarding risks, prevent harm, and respond appropriately to concerns. Through engaging presentations, practical exercises, and real-life case studies, participants strengthened their understanding of safeguarding principles and their individual responsibilities in creating a culture where everyone feels safe, respected, and protected.
The training also provided a comprehensive overview of internationally recognized safeguarding standards, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) Framework. Staff explored how these global standards align with FAWE’s safeguarding policies and operational procedures, ensuring that protection remains embedded across programmes, partnerships, and organizational systems.
Throughout the three days, participants actively engaged in discussions on ethical conduct, survivor-centred approaches, confidential reporting mechanisms, and the importance of early identification and mitigation of safeguarding risks. The collaborative learning environment encouraged staff to reflect on real-world scenarios, strengthen professional judgement, and reaffirm their shared responsibility to uphold the highest standards of integrity in every interaction with beneficiaries, colleagues, and partners.
The induction concluded with a renewed institutional commitment to making safeguarding everyone’s responsibility. By investing in staff capacity and strengthening internal systems, FAWE continued to foster an organizational culture where accountability, prevention, and protection are integral to programme delivery. As the organization expands its impact across Africa, safeguarding remains a cornerstone of its mission to ensure that every girl, every young person, and every vulnerable individual can learn, grow, and thrive in safe and supportive environments.
