Strengthening Coordinated Action for Adolescent Health and School Re-Entry in Kenya

The Forum for African Women Educationalists Kenya Chapter—FAWE Kenya—continues to play a key role in shaping inclusive education systems through its active participation in national policy and technical platforms.

On 25th–26th March, FAWE Kenya, as a member of the Technical Working Group on Adolescent Health, Teenage Pregnancy Monitoring, and School Re-entry, participated in a high-level meeting held at the Kenya Institute of Special Education in Nairobi.

The meeting was convened by the Ministry of Education Kenya in collaboration with the ZAMARA Foundation and the Nyanza Initiative for Girls’ Education and Empowerment, alongside key partners committed to advancing adolescent health and education outcomes.

The convening brought together government representatives, civil society organizations, and development partners to strengthen coordinated responses for learners affected by teenage pregnancy. Discussions focused on creating supportive, inclusive, and responsive education systems that enable learners to return to school, remain engaged, and successfully complete their education.

Participants emphasized that addressing teenage pregnancy and adolescent health requires integrated approaches that combine education, health services, and social support systems.

The meeting resulted in several important outcomes aimed at strengthening national coordination and programme delivery:

Establishment of a National Technical Working Group (TWG):
A formalized structure to guide policy implementation, coordination, and accountability across sectors.

Strengthening Data Systems through KEMIS:
Enhanced monitoring and reporting mechanisms to track progress, inform decision-making, and ensure evidence-based interventions.

Improving Access, Retention, and Completion:
Targeted strategies to support learners affected by teenage pregnancy in returning to school and completing their education.

Revitalizing School Health Clubs and Referral Systems:
Strengthening school-based platforms that provide health information, peer support, and access to essential services.

Promoting Inclusive Learning Environments:
Ensuring that re-enrolled learners are supported in safe, non-discriminatory, and enabling school environments.

Through its engagement in the Technical Working Group, FAWE Kenya reinforces its commitment to influencing policy and strengthening systems that support vulnerable learners—particularly girls affected by teenage pregnancy.

By working closely with government and partners, FAWE continues to advocate for holistic, gender-responsive approaches that address both the educational and health needs of adolescents.

As Kenya advances efforts to improve adolescent health and education outcomes, the outcomes of this meeting represent a significant step toward building inclusive systems that leave no learner behind.

FAWE remains committed to ensuring that every learner—regardless of their circumstances—has the opportunity to return to school, stay in school, and succeed.
