The FAWE Africa Board has announced the appointment of Ms. Martha R L Muhwezi as the new Executive Director of FAWE Africa effective 22 March 2019. Ms. Muhwezi’s selection was made soon after the 60th FAWE Africa Board meeting that took place 19-20 March 2019 in Nairobi. The announcement comes several months after the commencement of an extensive and competitive recruitment process during which Martha has been acting in the position since the departure of her predecessor in August 2018.

While making the announcement, the FAWE Africa chair Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang hailed Ms Muhwezi’s professionalism and devoted attention towards the empowerment woman and girls in the continent evidenced in her 5 years stint at FAWE Africa.

“Ms. Muhwezi has shown valuable experience, passion, professionalism and unconditional efforts to support and contribute towards women’s and girl’s education in Africa will without a doubt continue to propel FAWE to greater heights. Her commitment and devotion have established strong partnerships with many like-minded institutions and I have no doubt that with your continuous support and dedication, FAWE will continue on its mission.” Martha has been with FAWE Africa since April 2014.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended the partners who have over the years demonstrated their faithful support and deep commitment to FAWE’s work of promoting women and girls’ education in Africa and expressed her optimism that the partnership would continue to grow and blossom.

Prior to joining FAWE Africa, Ms. Muhwezi worked with FAWE Uganda Chapter as Executive Director and Christian Children’s Fund (Uganda) as Programme Officer. Ms. Muhwezi is a senior program management specialist and development worker and leader with more than 20 years of experience in the civil society sector nationally, regionally and internationally. Her areas of expertise include; Programme Design, Coordination, Management and Organizational Management. Martha has a Masters of Arts in Women and Gender studies and she is currently pursuing her PhD. in Gender studies.

Ms. Muhwezi becomes the sixth Executive Director of FAWE Africa since its founding in 1992. Her predecessors to the position are Prof. Eddah Gachukia (founding Executive Director), Prof. Penina Mlama, Dr. Codou Diaw, Ms. Oley Dibba-Wadda and Ms. Hendrina Chalwe Doroba.
