Across the sun-soaked towns of Kerewan and Wassu, something powerful is unfolding—not in conference halls or boardrooms, but in classrooms filled with curiosity, courage, and commitment. FAWE Gambia, with support from the World Food Programme (WFP), is rolling out a transformative Training of Trainers (ToT) programme aimed at equipping adolescent girls and peer health educators with the tools to lead.

This is more than training. It’s a blueprint for generational change.

Knowledge that Nourishes – and Liberates

At the heart of the sessions are essential life pillars:
Nutrition
Health
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
Gender Equality
School Feeding Programs

Each module is designed not just to inform, but to empower girls to become community advocates—able to teach, lead, and inspire others. These girls are no longer passive recipients of aid or knowledge; they are multipliers of change, shaping the health and equity outcomes of their schools and villages.

The training emphasizes peer education, encouraging girls to step into leadership roles and tackle real issues facing their communities—from early marriage to menstrual hygiene management to school absenteeism. In these interactive sessions, confidence takes root. Young girls who once sat quietly at the back are now leading conversations, facilitating group work, and proposing solutions.

“It’s not just what we learn—it’s what we do with it,” said one 15-year-old participant from Kerewan. “Now I can stand and speak for my rights and help others understand theirs.”

What makes this programme exceptional is its sustainability by design. Peer educators trained today will go on to train others, creating a community-led learning ecosystem that doesn’t end when the facilitators leave. The knowledge stays. The confidence grows. The leadership multiplies.

Girls with Knowledge. Girls with Voice. Girls with Power.

FAWE Gambia’s initiative reminds us of a simple truth: when girls are given knowledge and the opportunity to lead, they don’t just change their lives—they change everything around them.
