On October 28th, 2024, FAWE Uganda hosted a collaborative meeting with YARID Uganda at FAWE Uganda’s offices to initiate a groundbreaking project aimed at transforming the livelihoods of vulnerable youth and communities in Kampala. The meeting centered on developing a concept note for an innovative project that will address pressing issues such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment among marginalized groups, particularly focusing on women, youth, and refugee families in the Kampala metropolitan area.
The project aims to open pathways for these groups to access demand-driven skills and create meaningful employment opportunities in the green economy. By aligning skills development with market needs, FAWE Uganda and YARID Uganda intend to empower the youth and other vulnerable populations with knowledge and skills that foster sustainable economic growth. Beyond employment, this initiative is designed to increase community resilience to environmental challenges, create a skilled workforce, and drive sustainable growth in the green sector.
The anticipated impact of the project is multifaceted:
– Poverty and Inequality Reduction: By equipping vulnerable groups with relevant skills, the project will address poverty at its roots, promoting economic stability and self-sufficiency for disadvantaged families.
– Sustainable Economic Growth: Training a skilled and inclusive workforce will support a green economy, directly contributing to environmentally conscious economic growth within the Kampala region.
– Community Resilience: Through targeted skills development, the project will bolster communities’ adaptability to environmental changes, enhancing their long-term stability.
– Shifting Perceptions: By demonstrating the employability of refugees and vulnerable youth, this project aims to change mindsets within the private sector, fostering greater inclusion and diversity in green economy opportunities.
Representing FAWE Uganda at the meeting were Ogara Collin, the Research and Resource Mobilization Officer, and Lindy Quann, the Resource Mobilization Advisor. YARID’s delegation included Robert Ogali, Head of Programmes; Michael Masai, Head of Finance; Chance Kamba, Job Training and Placement Coordinator; and John Garcia, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Advisor. Otto Daniel Ben, the M&E Lead, joined the discussion online.
With this collaborative meeting, FAWE Uganda and YARID Uganda have set the foundation for a powerful partnership focused on sustainable development, social inclusion, and economic empowerment. Both organizations are optimistic that this endeavor will create lasting positive change, not only within Kampala but also as a model for other communities striving for inclusive, sustainable growth.
