Five different stories. One shared program.

The FAWE/Mastercard Foundation Second Chance Pathways for Increased Access to Tertiary Education for Marginalized Young Women and Men Program is not just about education. It is about transformation. It is about removing barriers and opening doors. It is about believing in young people who have been overlooked, underestimated, and left behind — and giving them the tools, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

James, Agernesh, Tatenda, Tshamala, and Yosef are proof that this approach works.

They are proof that marginalized young people, when given access to education and skills development, can become innovators, entrepreneurs, educators, engineers, and leaders. They are proof that second chances can change lives — and that changed lives can change communities, countries, and continents.

Their stories are also a reminder of the importance of initiatives like the 3rd Africa Skills Week 2026, which brought together young people from across the continent to learn, share, and connect. The event provided a platform for beneficiaries to engage with policymakers, educators, and industry leaders — and to see themselves as part of a larger movement for Africa’s development.

But perhaps the most powerful message from these five young people is this: they are not just beneficiaries. They are contributors.

They are not waiting for change. They are creating it. They are not asking for handouts. They are building solutions. They are not focused only on their own success. They are determined to uplift others.

“I want my learning journey to produce more than academic qualifications,” James says. “I want it to equip me with the capacity to create solutions, support others, and contribute to a future in which young Africans can participate meaningfully in the development of their communities and industries.”

That is the heart of the Second Chance Pathways Program. That is the promise of Africa’s youth. And that is the future we are building — together.

They came from different countries, studied different fields, and carried different dreams.
