In an era where practitioners seek not only to measure results but also to understand the realities behind them, case studies have emerged as powerful tools for capturing impact, amplifying lived experiences, and informing adaptive programming.

Over the years, the MEL field has evolved significantly in its use of case studies, moving beyond compliance-focused success stories to become rigorous tools for learning, accountability, and evidence generation. Unlike quantitative methods that primarily measure outputs and outcomes, case studies provide a human-centred understanding of the contexts, experiences, and complexities behind programme results. For organizations such as FAWE, they offer valuable insights into how interventions influence girls’ education, communities, and broader education systems.

As MEL practice matured, practitioners increasingly recognized the importance of authentic representation, ethical storytelling, informed consent, and balancing compelling narratives with credible evidence. Consequently, case studies became more systematically integrated into evaluation processes through structured qualitative methods, clear protocols, and triangulation of data from interviews, observations, focus group discussions, and document reviews. Within the education sector, they have proven invaluable in explaining not only whether interventions worked, but also how, why, and under what conditions change occurred. By uncovering contextual barriers, sustainability challenges, and innovative practices, case studies enable organizations like FAWE to strengthen adaptive programming, improve learning outcomes, and enhance long-term impact for girls and young women.

Today, case studies are increasingly recognized as strategic tools for learning, accountability, and decision-making. Approaches such as Most Significant Change (MSC), Outcome Harvesting, and Contribution Analysis have strengthened their analytical rigor while encouraging stakeholder participation. These methodologies capture diverse perspectives and generate richer evidence on how change occurs within complex educational ecosystems.

Importantly, case studies also support systems thinking by examining the relationships among learners, families, schools, communities, policymakers, and development partners. This broader perspective aligns closely with FAWE’s commitment to transformative, gender-responsive education and its focus on addressing the interconnected factors that influence educational equity, inclusion, and empowerment across Africa.

As discussions at the upcoming FAWE conference explore innovative approaches to evidence generation and organizational learning, case studies stand out as essential ingredients in effective MEL systems. They bridge the gap between data and human experience, transforming numbers into meaningful stories of change while maintaining analytical rigor. By documenting both successes and challenges, they enable organizations to learn, adapt, and make informed decisions that better serve learners and communities.

Ultimately, the evolution of case studies in MEL reflects a broader shift toward learning-driven development practice. While challenges such as resource requirements, subjectivity, and potential bias remain, their ability to generate nuanced insights, foster adaptive management, and elevate the voices of programme participants makes them indispensable to organizations committed to sustainable and equitable development.

For FAWE, case studies offer a powerful pathway for understanding what works, for whom, how, and why. By generating actionable evidence and amplifying the experiences of girls, educators, and communities, they can help ensure that learning continues to inform policy, practice, and investment decisions, advancing quality, inclusive, and gender-responsive education across Africa.

By Gordon Aomo, Senior Knowledge Management Officer, FAWE As the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) prepares for its forthcoming conference, the growing importance of case studies in Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) presents a timely opportunity to reflect how evidence can drive meaningful change in education across Africa.
