MZUZU, Malawi \u2013 On 6 August, the Executive Director of the Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi (FAWEMA), Mr. Wesley Chabwera, delivered an impassioned call to action to students enrolled in the Bridging Programme at Mzuzu University (MZUNI). Urging them to work hard and seize the opportunity to advance into mainstream university studies, Mr. Chabwera reminded the 62 inductees that they were among 750 young people selected nationwide under the FAWE\/Mastercard Foundation Bursary Programme\u2014a life-changing initiative designed to expand access to higher education for marginalised youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The induction ceremony, held on Tuesday at Mzuzu University, marked the beginning of a transformative journey for the 62 students who had successfully navigated a rigorous selection process. The fully funded scholarship, which covered the student participants until they completed their tertiary education, represented more than financial support\u2014it was a gateway to opportunities that might otherwise have remained out of reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I urge you all to grab this opportunity with seriousness and pass with flying colours so that you enter generic programmes where the bursary will continue supporting you until you complete your studies,” said Mr. Chabwera. His words carried the weight of experience and the urgency of a mission: to ensure that every young person, regardless of their background, could access quality education and build a brighter future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The beneficiaries had undergone a comprehensive selection process that involved the scrutiny of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) results by university academics. FAWEMA also verified applicants’ eligibility to ensure the programme benefited marginalised youth who would otherwise struggle to afford tertiary education. Mzuzu University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Associate Professor Simeon Gwayi, commended FAWE and the Mastercard Foundation for expanding educational opportunities for disadvantaged young people. The Bridging Programme was part of the broader Second Chance Pathways Project, a visionary initiative aimed at enabling 1,350 marginalised young women and men in Malawi to access tertiary education. The project provided pathways through bridging programmes and Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training (TEVET) programmes at technical colleges, as well as health sciences courses at the Malawi College of Health Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This initiative reflected FAWE’s continental commitment to creating second chance opportunities for young people who, through circumstances beyond their control, had been denied their first chance at tertiary education.
