The meeting, which brought together FAWE’s Deputy Executive Director and Head of Programmes, Ms. Teresa Omondi-Adeitan, and YAWC’s Global President, Dr. Stephanie Wirba, alongside Josephine, President of the YAWC Centre, represented a significant moment in the ongoing collaboration between two of Africa’s most influential women’s organisations.

The courtesy visit provided an invaluable opportunity for the two organisations to share experiences, celebrate existing partnerships, and explore new avenues for collaboration. The discussions were anchored in a shared commitment to advancing girls’ education, preventing gender-based violence, and empowering vulnerable and out-of-school girls through mentorship and advocacy.

FAWE’s long-standing partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, which has expanded access to post-secondary education for an estimated 1.2 million young women, demonstrated the transformative power of strategic alliances in creating continent-wide impact . This meeting with YAWC reflected FAWE’s commitment to building a broad coalition of partners dedicated to Africa’s girls and young women.

A highlight of the meeting was the celebration of the existing Memorandum of Understanding between YAWC and FAWE Rwanda. This partnership had already demonstrated the potential for meaningful collaboration in advancing girls’ education and empowerment at the national level. The success of this partnership provided a strong foundation for expanding collaboration across the continent.

The discussions also reflected on the broader ecosystem of partnerships that supported girls’ education and women’s empowerment. FAWE’s work across 34 African countries, its role in the Make Way consortium, and its engagement with organisations like UNGEI and ANPPCAN had demonstrated that collective action was essential to addressing the complex challenges facing girls and young women across Africa .

The meeting reinforced the deep alignment between FAWE’s mission and YAWC’s vision. Both organisations were united by a commitment to:

– Advancing Girls’ Education: Ensuring that every girl had access to quality education from early childhood through tertiary levels.

– Preventing Gender-Based Violence: Creating safe learning environments and communities where girls could learn and thrive free from violence and exploitation.

– Empowering Vulnerable and Out-of-School Girls: Providing mentorship, advocacy, and second chance pathways for girls who had been left behind by traditional education systems.

These shared priorities reflected a broader understanding that education was not merely about access—it was about creating environments where girls could lead, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

FAWE’s experience had demonstrated that partnerships were essential to achieving impact at scale. Through its collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, FAWE had supported 10,550 young people across ten African countries, providing them with second chance pathways to tertiary education and dignified employment . Its involvement in the Break Free! Alliance had strengthened youth sexual and reproductive health and rights across nine countries, contributing to the fight against child marriage and teenage pregnancy. The meeting with YAWC represented another step in FAWE’s strategic approach to partnership building. By strengthening collaboration with like-minded organisations, FAWE was amplifying its impact and ensuring that its work remained connected to regional and continental priorities.

As the meeting concluded, both parties expressed optimism about the future of their collaboration. The shared commitment to creating lasting impact for girls and young women across Africa was not merely aspirational—it was anchored in proven strategies, dedicated leadership, and a recognition that when partners unite around a common vision, the results were truly transformative.

NAIROBI, Kenya – On 5 August, the FAWE Regional Secretariat welcomed a distinguished delegation from the Young African Women Congress (YAWC) Network for a courtesy visit that underscored the power of strategic partnerships in advancing girls’ education and women’s leadership across the continent.
