Among the delegates shaping this conversation at the <\/span><b>5th Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, held at the <\/span><b>Abuja Continental Hotel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was <\/span><b>Emily Gumba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Senior Programme Officer at FAWE Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held under the urgent and inclusive theme, \u201cWorking Together to Reduce the Burden of Sickle Cell Disease: Leaving No One Behind,\u201d the congress drew over <\/span><b>500 participants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from across the world\u2014<\/span><b>healthcare professionals, researchers, patients, caregivers, advocates, policy influencers, and industry leaders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014to advance the global SCD agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What made this four-day gathering extraordinary was its <\/span><b>patient-focused, cross-disciplinary approach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Far from being siloed into medical jargon or scientific enclaves, the congress embraced the full spectrum of lived experience. Sessions ranged from <\/span><b>basic and translational science<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to <\/span><b>clinical best practices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>public health strategies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>psychosocial impact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><b>sociopolitical realities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that shape access to care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a representative of FAWE Africa\u2014a network grounded in the rights and health of girls and women\u2014<\/span><b>Emily Gumba\u2019s presence carried a vital message<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: that the fight against Sickle Cell Disease is also a fight for <\/span><b>gender equity, health equity, and access to inclusive education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In too many communities, adolescent girls living with SCD face layers of stigma, school exclusion, and unmet health needs. Advocacy for their inclusion must be as bold as the science driving treatment breakthroughs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, the congress also explored <\/span><b>innovative policy solutions and scalable interventions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including those aimed at reaching <\/span><b>marginalized populations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with affordable and effective therapies.
