Through the #EmpoweringVulnerableChildrenwithEducation (#EVE) project, the partners recently conducted a 5-day awareness-raising exercise in the Mbeza and Muchila areas of Namwala District, focusing on increasing education access and addressing barriers such as child marriage and school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV).

Community Mobilization for Change
The #EVE project brought together parents, teachers, and traditional leaders to sensitize their communities on the importance of education and the dangers of practices like child marriage and SRGBV. These community-driven dialogues emphasized every child’s right to education and highlighted the long-term consequences of denying children, especially girls, the opportunity to learn and grow.

One of the most impactful moments of the campaign was the testimony of Precious Hamweemba, a 22-year-old Grade 9 pupil and survivor of child marriage. Precious bravely shared her story, shedding light on the harsh realities faced by young girls forced into early marriages.

Precious’ Story: A Call to Action
Precious’ journey is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of education. Married off at a young age, she endured significant challenges, including health complications during childbirth that required surgical intervention. “I had to undergo an operation at the hospital for me to deliver my baby because I suffered health complications. I wouldn’t wish any child to be in the situation I was in at all,” she shared.

Her marriage not only deprived her of educational opportunities but also left her dependent and struggling with low self-esteem. Now back in school, Precious aspires to become a nurse and is determined to complete her education. She passionately urged parents and traditional leaders to end child marriage, emphasizing the health risks, limited career prospects, and emotional toll it takes on young girls.

Key Messages from the Campaign
The awareness-raising exercise focused on several critical themes:
1. Every Child’s Right to Education: Education is a fundamental right that empowers children to reach their full potential and contribute to their communities.
2. The Dangers of Child Marriage: Early marriage exposes girls to health risks, limits their education and career opportunities, and perpetuates cycles of poverty.
3. Addressing School-Related Gender-Based Violence: Creating safe and inclusive learning environments is essential for ensuring that all children, especially girls, can thrive in school.

A Collective Effort for Lasting Change
The #EVE project is a shining example of how partnerships between organizations like FAWEZA, World Vision Zambia, and the Education Above All Foundation can drive meaningful change. By working closely with communities, the project is not only raising awareness but also fostering a collective commitment to protecting children’s rights and ensuring their access to education.

World Vision Zambia continues to collaborate with communities to create safe and nurturing environments where all children can grow, develop, and thrive. Through initiatives like #EVE, the organization is addressing the root causes of educational disparities and empowering vulnerable children to build brighter futures.

In a powerful collaboration aimed at transforming lives, the Forum for African Women Educationalists of Zambia (FAWEZA) and World Vision Zambia, with support from the Education Above All Foundation’s Educate A Child program, are working tirelessly to ensure that the most vulnerable children in Zambia have access to quality education.
