This year marks a monumental milestone in the journey of Dr. Martha Muhwezi, FAWE’s Executive Director, as she celebrates 20 years of unwavering commitment to gender equity and quality education for girls and young women across Africa. Her remarkable leadership has left an indelible mark on the organization’s growth, impact, and the future of African girls, guiding FAWE from its early years to becoming a powerful force shaping policy, transforming communities, and empowering generations of girls across the continent.
A Vision Fuelled by Purpose
Dr. Martha Muhwezi’s path to FAWE was paved by a deep personal conviction: that education is the most potent tool to break the cycle of poverty and inequality, especially for girls and young women. Reflecting on her early motivations, she shares, “At the time, gender disparities in education were glaring, and I wanted to be part of an organization that was actively dismantling those barriers.”
Joining FAWE Uganda in 2005 as a Technical Advisor on secondment from FAWE Africa, Dr. Martha Muhwezi immediately set to work strengthening institutional capacity and building advocacy frameworks aimed at increasing girls’ access to quality education. Her focus on advocacy and community engagement ignited a spark that would shape her remarkable career.
A Journey of Growth and Impact
From her early years in Uganda, Dr. Martha Muhwezi quickly rose through the ranks. She served as FAWE Uganda’s Technical Advisor for nearly three years before becoming the Executive Director, a position she held for seven transformative years. In 2012, she transitioned to the Regional Office as a Program Officer. Today, as FAWE’s Executive Director, Dr. Muhwezi has worked to strengthen FAWE’s presence across the 33 African countries where it operates, ensuring the continued advancement of the FAWE cause.
Dr. Martha Muhwezi reflects on her journey:
“It’s been one of continuous growth, learning, and a deep commitment to transforming the educational landscape for girls. FAWE’s evolution from a small network to a leading pan-African organization has been both fulfilling and humbling.”
Pioneering Programs with Lasting Impact
Throughout her tenure, Dr. Martha Muhwezi has been at the forefront of several groundbreaking programs that have redefined the educational landscape for girls across Africa. Among the most transformative is the Gender Responsive Pedagogy (GRP) initiative, which equips teachers with the tools to deliver gender-sensitive education. This program ensures that girls and boys alike benefit from an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Another landmark program that has reshaped the lives of countless girls is TUSEME (“Let Us Speak Out”), a platform empowering girls with the confidence to voice their opinions and address the challenges they face. This initiative has given girls in underserved communities a powerful tool to advocate for their rights and create change from within.
Perhaps one of Dr. Muhwezi’s most profound contributions is her role in advancing STEM and TVET education for girls. As a passionate advocate for career pathways that offer girls both economic and social empowerment, Dr. Martha Muhwezi’s own academic journey—culminating in a PhD focused on TVET—has been deeply informed by her work in this field.
“These programs and the transformation they’ve brought are a constant source of inspiration,” Dr. Muhwezi says. “Seeing girls graduate, enter meaningful careers, and return to uplift others reminds me that when girls are empowered, they not only succeed—they transform entire communities.”
Rising Above Challenges with Resilience
FAWE’s journey has not been without its challenges. From navigating funding constraints to confronting socio-cultural resistance, Dr. Muhwezi’s leadership has been tested time and again. However, each challenge has reinforced her resilience and unwavering commitment to the cause.
“I’ve learnt that leadership in a multi-country context requires adaptability and inclusivity,” Dr. Martha Muhwezi shares. “It has taught me the importance of listening deeply, leading with empathy, and building consensus. It’s not about individual success, but about collective action.”
Stories that Inspire and Transform
One of the stories that continues to inspire Dr. Muhwezi is that of a young girl from rural Northern Uganda. A recipient of a FAWE scholarship, she pursued STEM education despite the challenges of early child marriage. She excelled academically, eventually becoming a chemical engineer and now running a mentorship program for girls in her community.
“It’s stories like these that fuel my passion,” says Dr. Martha Muhwezi. “When girls are given the opportunity, they don’t just survive—they thrive and become agents of change.”
A Future Built on Empowerment
As Dr. Martha Muhwezi celebrates her 20-year milestone at FAWE, her vision for the future is as bold as ever. FAWE will continue to lead the charge in making education systems across Africa more inclusive, equitable, and empowering. For the next generation of African girls and women, she envisions a future where opportunities are not determined by gender or geography, but by talent and ambition.
“Together, we will make that future a reality,” Dr. Martha Muhwezi affirms.
As the leader of FAWE, Dr. Martha Muhwezi’s legacy is one of transformative education, steadfast advocacy, and relentless dedication to the cause of gender equity.
