Tracking gender equality in education in Africa – FAWE develops data collection instruments
FAWE has developed two instruments to measure progress towards achieving the Education for All (EFA) objectives and education-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), as well as progress towards gender equality in key aspects of education.
The first tool – the Gender Equality in Education Scorecard – assesses how selected African countries have performed towards achieving gender equality in education. Piloted by FAWE since 2011, the scorecard has used a gender lens to compare and analyse the abilities of nine countries2 in East and Southern Africa to overcome their specific barriers and nurture gender equality in education. Four key parameters were used for ranking the countries: gender barriers to education, political will, educational resources and opportunities, and gender inequality in society.
