FAWE Madagascar held an extensive workshop from 16 to 19 November 2009 to establish the first Centre of Excellence (COE) in the country at Imerintsiatosika High School. This brings to eight the number of COEs established in 2009, in line with FAWE’s goal for the year.
The four-day workshop brought together FAWE Madagascar, the Ministry of Education, local authorities, community leaders, teachers, students, parents, school management and other stakeholders to discuss the status of girls’ education in Imerintsiatosika and collaboratively develop an action to transform the high school into a gender-responsive school that addresses the challenges affecting girls’ education.
FAWE’s Centre of Excellence model transforms ordinary schools into gender-responsive schools that offer quality education and pay attention to the physical, academic and social dimensions of both girls’ and boys’ education
Seven COEs have been established this year – in Benin, Comoros, Swaziland, Togo, Uganda, Zanzibar and Zambia.
