FAWE participated in the International Women Leaders’ Initiative for Reproductive Health organised by the Council of Women World Leaders, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in New York, US, from 30 September to 1 October 2008
The consultative meeting brought together women leaders from NGOs, the media and civil society to identify solutions for improving women’s reproductive health as an essential element for attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The meeting sought to identify strategies to engage women’s leadership in advocating for women’s reproductive health; promote networking between organisations that address women’s health, rights, education and economic empowerment; and explore opportunities and strategies to expand funding available for investment in these issues.
Purposefully scheduled to take place immediately after the midpoint review of the MDGs, the meeting set out the current reality for women in reproductive health and family planning; analysed evidence linking reproductive health to other important issues facing women; and discussed ways to further the engagement of women leaders and women’s organisations in advancing the reproductive health and rights of women within the MDG framework.
