Friday, 22 February 2013FAWE has been selected as a member of the coordination committee of the new Education for All (EFA) regional structure for sub-Saharan Africa launched by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova on 14 February 2013.
The structure will coordinate and accelerate African actions and responses for the achievement of the EFA goals at continental level.
Established by major development partners in 2000, the six EFA goals aim to meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults by 2015. However, UNESCO has found that just two years from the 2015 target, at least 31 African countries are unlikely to meet the EFA goals.
With appropriate strategic action such as reinforcement of political commitment and financial mobilisation at national and regional levels, 12 African countries could still manage to meet the goals by 2015.
FAWE will serve on the EFA Coordination Committee together with UNESCO, UNICEF, ADEA, ANCEFA, Save the Children and CONFEMEN, and support efforts geared towards attaining EFA by 2015 and achieving a number of post-2015 education goals.
