FAWE’s gender-responsive pedagogy to be integrated in teacher training in Zanzibar

Jan 2012 e-bulletin - GRPFAWE has concluded an agreement with Oxfam Canada to support the introduction of FAWE’s Gender-Responsive Pedagogy (GRP) model in teacher training in Zanzibar from 2012 and help strengthen the technical capacity of Ministry of Education (MoE) of Zanzibar in mainstreaming GRP in teacher education.

The integration of GRP in pre-service teacher training aims to provide trainee teachers with the knowledge and understanding to effectively respond to the learning needs of both girls and boys, and to advance gender-responsive teaching and learning.

FAWE Zanzibar will thus introduce the GRP model in one selected teacher training college, work with key stakeholders in Zanzibar to build their competencies in Gender-Responsive Pedagogy through national awareness training, and support and accompany the MoE in replicating the GRP model in more teacher training institutions. In addition to Zanzibar, ministries of education in Burundi, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda will receive national awareness training on GRP from their respective FAWE National Chapters.

FAWE began piloting the integration of its GRP model in teacher training institutions in 2007 as part of a joint initiative with the United Nations Children’s Fund Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (UNICEF-ESARO) that seeks to improve the quality of teaching in African schools by making teachers more gender-responsive in their pedagogical practice.

The two-phase project (2007-2009 and 2010-2012), scheduled to end in April 2012, is being implemented in five teacher training colleges in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

To date, the GRP project has measurably enriched teaching and learning methodologies in participating training institutions.

In Malawi in particular, 1,170 student-teachers were trained in GRP at the Karonga Teachers’ Training College between 2007 and 2011, contributing to increased pass rates for female and male students in national exams. As a result of the success of the project, FAWE’s GRP model is to be replicated in an additional 10 teacher training institutions in Malawi.
