Friday, 29 July 2011Ministers of Education and government representatives from 17 African countries came together with FAWE’s strategic and funding partners and members to strategise on FAWE’s future direction during the organisation’s 8th General Assembly meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, from 28 to 29 July 2011.
The meeting centred on strategies for FAWE’s sustainability in the new funding environment. Recognising that donors’ priorities are increasingly shifting away from education and focusing on other developmental issues, FAWE deliberated on new approaches that will allow the organisation to grow in strategic and sustainable ways over the coming five years. This growth is crucial if FAWE is to strengthen its ability to advocate for the empowerment of Africa’s female population through education.
The 8th General Assembly meeting also provided a platform for FAWE to evaluate its 2008-2012 Strategic Plan and to contemplate new approaches for its 2013-2017 Strategic Plan. FAWE reported on the results of its work during the 2008-2010 period, and reflected on incorporating new strategies such as mobile communication technologies in its work. FAWE also reviewed its governance structure in a bid to improve its organisational effectiveness and to grow within the current donor setting.
